Welcome to the web pages of the
  Lower Streatham Neighbourhood Watch
          and Residents Association
London SW16, U.K.

Please direct comments, suggestions and criticisms to Tony Booth (see also the foot of this page).  We now have our own domain name lowerstreatham.org.uk.
          Scope of the Association

The Lower Streatham Neighbourhood Watch and Residents Association, referred to here as "the Association", also referred to as LSNWRA or just LSNW covers certain areas and activities.  This web site gives a descriptive outline of the Association, its aims and concerns.

The constitution of the Association was formally accepted at the public meeting at Immanuel School on 18 September 2002 and may be viewed here on this web site.  There has been a good level of attendance and general interest at the meetings.  Look at the "About us" section to find out more about us.

There has been some discussion over the issue of whether the neighbourhood watch aspect, concerning mainly security, or the residents' association aspect, concerning general social and environmental matters, should take precedence.  It was decided that both are of interest, and that the initial efforts will go into establishing the neighbourhood watch part of the activity, with the residents' association aspects then being allowed to develop within the organisation.  These web pages are intended to include an outline of the interests and topics of both sorts.

The Association draws its members from residents in the following roads in London SW16, U.K.:
  Buckleigh Road
Ellison Road up to Guildersfield junction
  Guildersfield Road
  Kempshott Road
  Northanger Road
  Penistone Road

As a very rough estimate there are about a thousand households in this area.  We have begun a membership list which currently runs at over a hundred named persons, thus representing perhaps twice that many within their families.

  • Brixton Tesco Demonstration Ice Rink Development. 22 Dec 04 - Mayor lifts his direction order on Streatham Hub!
The Mayor has lifted his direction order on the Streatham Hub application! A letter from the Mayor's office should arrive by Friday. This means that Lambeth can now refer the application to GOL under the Shopping Direction. GOL have 21 days within which to decide whether they are happy for Lambeth to issue the planning permission. Meanwhile planning officers will continue to resolve the last few details on the S106 agreement.

10 Sep 02 - Tesco's resubmitted their planning application with new proposals which include a new ice rink and new leisure centre - plus community facilities etc.

In May 2003 the Mayor of London stopped progress of this redevelopment plan until there is a sufficiently strong guarantee that the funding will be available for the ice rink and leisure facilities. The loss of an ice rink through development as happened a few years ago in Richmond must not occur here. We await news on this.

Look at the website for the campaign to save the rink at Streatham Ice Skating Action Group (SISAG).  An outline of this issue with a pictorial impression is available in their web page from the Streatham Society.

Now is the time to speak up if we the local residents are to have any say in what happens in this development.  For further notes about this click here for the "Topics" section.

This site offers a way to protect your property so that in case of theft there is a way of tracking where it went to, or conversely of checking to see if an item you encounter is stolen property. It is an interesting venture aimed at reducing crime against domestic parties worldwide. This remarkable scheme grows from ideas originating in Iceland and brought by Njall Hardarson to UK via his company in Manchester.

The Polyphony Choir are planning a performance of this rarely heard work on Sunday 9th November.
Unlike his ever-popular oratorio The Crucifixion, Stainer's other major choral works are now seldom heard. If you would like to be kept informed of the details for this, then please contact the choir here, and we will email information to you as plans progress.

  • St Philip parish church in Norbury and the "Libera" choir.

About a mile south of our patch is the church of another parish, St Philips, Beech Road, Norbury, which is also the home of the rather famous Libera choir. Consequently the standard of music at St Philip's is high, and the choir, under its choirmaster Robert Prizeman, receives world-wide acclaim (check out this German fan web site and these fan site links) and has produced a number of recordings on CD as well as having its own attractive Libera web site.
